Marketing Yourself
Ideas to enhance your name in your industry
Idea 1 - Be an Expert, Not a Jerk
We can all perhaps rattle off someone’s name who is regarded as an ‘expert’ in the field of horticulture. What makes them an expert, but not you? Is it a case of who you know, not what you know? This is why networking is so important.
But what about the JERKS? What are they? Perhaps one definition is a person who claims to be the best of ‘X’ or ‘Y’ but lacks the background or evidence. It is best to never be one of these as it will damage your reputation. Be clear in what you know, your level of expertise and you will avoid the JERK syndrome.
Idea 2 – Comment on public issues
Read the local paper. If you see a topic that is related to horticulture (such as a tree removal, a park development, a comment on weeds, etc.) provide a comment to the Editor of the newspaper. If your comment is printed it provides you with a bonus of exposure and public awareness.
Idea 3 – Contribute
Yes, this means being actively involved in something – an industry association, a local community group, even writing for the local paper or other magazines. Your name will be better known the more your face and name is in front of other people.
Idea 4 – Present solutions
If someone has a problem and if you know a solution, then give it – even if you give it free. By offering something for free will convey a message that your knowledge is abundant and a little ‘freebie’ here and there is your ‘donation’ to the greater wealth of general knowledge. Never overlook this subtle factor.
Idea 5 – Branding yourself
Do you have a website that promotes YOU?
Does your email reiterate your qualifications, recognition or awards?
Do you have a business card?
Do you network with others and go out of your way to meet others?
